On June 3rd, for Lakewood’s Art District First Friday event, the Chicano Humanities Arts and Council (CHAC) opened its doors to the public for the first time in almost two years. More than 400 guests showed up to the gallery’s grand opening of their new space at 1560 Teller Street. There was music for the guests to enjoy while browsing through the art on display, or to dance outside and enjoy the summer evening. There was also a performance by Grupo Huitzilopochtli, an indigenous Aztec dance group.

Many guests attended, including the father of the late Alicia Cardenas, who the event was dedicated to. Cardena’s art was the first display as you walked in, accompanied by a painting of her made by her father. Both new and established artists from the local community were showcased during the grand opening. This event marks a new chapter in the history of CHAC, and they encourage the community to visit their new gallery in Lakewood, which is open to the public on Wednesday through Saturday from 12-4 p.m., and on First Fridays from 3-9 p.m.
