The City of Aurora announced the installation of 30 emergency homeless shelters. These shelters were installed on the Salvation Army grounds on 33rd Avenue in Aurora. This interim solution will provide up to 60 homeless beds during the upcoming winter season. These shelters from the commercial firm Pallet are prefabricated and have storage space and an electrical connection so that their occupants can use heaters or air conditioners.
“Everyone deserves a safe and warm place to sleep,” said Jessica Prosser, director of the Aurora Department of Housing and Community Services. Prosser continues, “With winter looming, we remain committed to helping the homeless with alternative emergency options, such as Pallet shelters.” This $ 290,000 project was funded with resources from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the Federal Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG).
Resting with dignity
Those housed in shelters are helped to recover and achieve stability. “These shelters provide a space for the homeless to rest in dignity and receive the guidance they need. Once people are reminded of their worth and dignity, they tend to fight for a more permanent situation for their lives,” said Salvation Army spokeswoman Kristen Baluyot. Homeless people receive support in terms of health, food and personal hygiene services.
