In the next few hours, Denver city authorities will evacuate three homeless camps in the downtown area. This move will affect over 300 people who currently call these camps their improvised home. The decision arises as part of Mayor Mike Johnston’s House1000 program, which aims to relocate homeless individuals to covered and stable shelters.

In their session on Monday, December 18, the Denver City Council approved the acquisition of a new location for the homeless. This new facility is the Radisson hotel at 4849 Bannock St. The homeless individuals who have been living in the three specific camps located near 20th and Champa, 22nd and Stout, and 18th and Marion will be transferred to this new location.

Mayor Johnston Speaks

So far, Denver spokespersons indicate that the efforts of the House1000 initiative have allowed more than 800 homeless individuals to be taken off the streets in recent months. “The goal of relocating 1,000 people to safe shelters by the end of the year is close to being achieved,” states a bulletin received from the city. However, concerns persist about the capacity of the shelters and the adaptation of people to the new locations.

Mayor Mike Johnston expressed that “evacuations are part of an ongoing effort to provide stable shelter and support services to those in need. Although our work is not done, the people of Denver have opened their hearts and rolled up their sleeves to make this holiday season a truly special time for many of our homeless neighbors.”
