The COVID-19 pandemic has made immigrant families residing in the 80010-zip code “extremely vulnerable” according to a study by the Aurora Community Connection (ACC). This northern Aurora area has the highest proportion of immigrants in the entire state. According to this research, 76 percent of the families living there have lost their jobs or only work jobs unable to cover the basic costs to provide for a family.
About 61 percent of these immigrants lack the financial resources to pay rent for the month of May. About three out of four of those families, 72 percent, do not receive nor qualify for government aid, and neither can they receive food stamps, unemployment assistance, or support to pay for public services. Additionally, very few members of those families qualify to receive the economic stimulus check from the government.
Mexicans and Salvadorans
Colorado exceeded 17,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, affecting the entire state. The impact has been varied, however. The families consulted by the ACC are often marginalized by poverty, race, and immigration. “Those families carry the highest burden,” said Robin Waterman, founding physician and ACC director. According to Census data, more than half of the 15,000 immigrants in the 80010-area come from Mexico, followed by Salvadorans, and African refugees.
The Hispanic percentage, 55 percent, is the highest in the Denver metro area. More than half, 54 percent, were born outside of the U.S., and about eight of ten are non-citizens. A little less than half of the residents, 48 percent, speak at least some English. Poverty affects 44 percent of children there, and the average household income is 40 percent below the Denver average. Many of the area residents were formerly restaurant and hotel workers.
