The first anniversary of the Linda Sosa Foundation not only marks a year of community work, but also confirms a clear mission. This foundation seeks to close educational gaps and open real opportunities for Latino and minority students in Colorado. The story of Kiara Aceves Padilla, a 20-year-old Nursing student at Regis University, reflects the tangible impact this nonprofit organization has on minority students in the United States.
Kiara is in her third semester and is preparing to formally enter the clinical nursing program. “In a few months I will begin continuing my studies in medical care centers, combining theory and practice,” she said. She has a clear and immediate goal: to graduate and earn her Bachelor’s Degree. In the long term, she dreams of pursuing graduate studies. She chose this career for a deeply personal reason—her mother lives with several medical conditions that Kiara wants to better understand in order to help her.

Fewer opportunities for nursing professionals
Kiara also wants to serve others who face barriers in the health care system. For that reason, she will also earn a degree in Spanish. For her, mastering Spanish is not a minor detail, but an essential professional tool. Kiara is convinced that bilingual nurses can transform the experience of immigrant patients, build trust, and reduce the discrimination many communities face.
“It’s not just about caring for patients, but about representing them and standing with them,” she says. However, her path is not without concern. Kiara expresses sadness and disagreement with the recent decision by the federal government to reclassify nursing and limit access to scholarships and financial aid for graduate studies. Although this measure does not eliminate the career, it severely restricts future opportunities for students like her.

Impact of financial support
Kiara believes the impact of this measure will be profound for the communities that most need care. This is where the work of the Linda Sosa Foundation becomes especially meaningful. Kiara is one of seven students who received a scholarship to complete the current academic term. Linda Sosa, president of the foundation, understands that there is a structural gap and that private support can make a difference. The foundation raises funds and channels them directly to the educational institutions where students are enrolled.
“Education is the foundation for transforming entire families and communities. Our mission is to ensure that talent and effort are not left behind due to lack of resources,” Sosa said. She also thanked the six donors who contributed so students could continue their programs this semester. “One year after our creation, we reaffirm our commitment to investing in education, which means investing in the future,” Sosa concluded.
