Celebrating good news is also part of our responsibility as a media outlet, and today we do so with deep pride. At the 2025 Convention of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP), held at the University of San Diego, El Comercio de Colorado was once again honored with the José Martí National Journalism Awards. With these ten new honors, we surpass the milestone of one hundred awards in a decade—an achievement that reflects consistency, discipline, and commitment to Colorado’s Latino community.

What gratifies us most is that these recognitions showcase our evolution. Ten years ago, we were a newspaper with a strong print edition. Today, we are a multimedia platform serving readers across all fronts: print, digital, web, newsletter, and podcast. This transformation is no accident. We have responded proactively to how Latinos consume information and to the need to be where our readers seek us.

This year, we received awards in virtually every area of the profession: editorial content, design, photography, sports, entertainment, health, political coverage, and audio and video production. One of the most moving recognitions was the Gold Award for Best Photo of the Year, for an image that captured the pain and hope of Venezuelan exiles demanding freedom for their political prisoners. Knowing that our camera amplified that cry is, for me, a reaffirmation of why we do journalism.

Our podcast honored

We were also recognized for our podcast, “Hoy con El Comercio de Colorado,” for an episode recorded in District 8, in the northern part of the state, where 40 percent of residents are Hispanic. That conversation with voters shows how we have expanded our reach to fully reflect the realities of Colorado’s Latino community. In sports, our newsroom once again earned the Gold Award as the best sports section in the country—for the second time.

We cover everything from charrería and the WWU to snow and extreme sports, with the talent of analysts such as Luis Canela, Carlos Montosa, Juan Carlos Bravo, and Sergio Domínguez, whose photograph of an equestrian athlete also won the top honor at the 2025 José Martí Awards. These awards are not a finish line, but a renewed commitment. We will continue to grow, innovate, and—above all—serve our community, which is the very reason El Comercio de Colorado exists.
