Aurora at-large City Councilman Rob Andrews was arrested late Saturday night by city police after making an improper traffic maneuver—described as a U-turn or a turn from the wrong lane—which led to an investigation for driving under the influence (DUI). The case is now in the hands of the municipal prosecutor, as public attention grows over the political implications of the arrest.

According to the Aurora Police Department, traffic officers stopped Andrews after observing the unsafe maneuver. During the stop, officers initiated a DUI investigation and, following field sobriety tests, proceeded with the arrest. In addition to the DUI allegation, Andrews faces charges of careless driving and turning from the wrong lane. He was issued a summons to appear before Aurora Municipal Court.

So far, authorities have not released details about specific alcohol tests or recorded levels. In statements to local media, Andrews said he will take responsibility, cooperate with the legal process, and be “transparent and accountable,” without providing further details. The booking photo (mugshot) circulating was taken from social media and has not been released by the Aurora Police Department.

Who is Rob Andrews?

Rob Andrews is a newly elected at-large councilman, elected in November 2025 and sworn in January 2026, meaning he has been in office only a few weeks. Identified with a progressive profile, his agenda has focused on affordable housing, public safety, and police reform. He won his seat with about 52% of the vote in the municipal election, a race that shifted the balance of power on the Aurora City Council toward a progressive majority.

Legal and Political Implications

In Colorado, a first DUI is typically classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor, with potential penalties including up to 364 days in jail, fines, license suspension, mandatory classes, community service, and probation. The severity can increase if aggravating factors are confirmed, such as a high blood alcohol level, an accident, or the presence of minors.

From a political standpoint, a DUI does not automatically require the resignation or removal of a council member in Aurora. The city charter does not list it as a direct cause for removal unless it results in a felony conviction or other specific circumstances. The City Council could issue a censure or pursue more severe avenues, such as a voter-initiated recall, but that would require qualified majorities or thousands of signatures.

At this time, there are no indications that such steps are underway. Precedents in Colorado show that elected officials have retained their offices after DUI cases, though they face media pressure, public scrutiny, and medium-term political costs. For now, Andrews’ future will depend on the progress of the judicial process and how the institutional and public response evolves in the coming weeks.
