The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) launched an ambitious $40 million investment plan to subsidize the upgrade of heating and cooling systems in metropolitan homes and businesses. The initiative aims to expand the use of heat pumps, an electric technology that replaces both old gas furnaces and conventional cooling systems, allowing homes to be cooled and heated with a single zero-emission unit.

The core of this program lies in a direct $1,500 discount on the purchase and installation of equipment certified for energy efficiency. This financial assistance comes at a key moment when families face increasingly intense summers and harsh winters. Fernando Briones, spokesperson for DRCOG, highlights that these incentives are significant and that the major advantage for residents’ wallets is that they can be combined with other current state and federal rebates.

Guidance to Install Heat Pumps

To guide users through this technical process, the program provides free bilingual energy advisors to assist interested parties. Briones explains that these advisors are not automated systems, but real people who evaluate each home’s situation and help calculate the final savings from installing heat pumps. This support is crucial for those with equipment over 12 years old, which poses a health risk and a high cost if it unexpectedly fails in the middle of winter.

The transition to heat pumps not only stabilizes monthly energy bill costs, but also has a direct impact on public health. During seasons of high pollution or ozone levels caused by wildfire smoke in the state, this technology makes it possible to cool homes while keeping windows closed, purifying indoor air. Joyce Bundgaard, a Denver resident who has already made the transition in her home, says the change reduced noise in her house and drastically improved her family’s respiratory health.

Although the primary $1,500 discount is focused on the ten counties of the Denver metropolitan area, the free advisory service is open to all Colorado residents. Those living in mountain regions or in the southern part of the state can still contact the program’s DRCOG advisors to receive guidance and locate local incentive programs offered by their own energy providers.
