The Denver Broncos sparked debate over the construction of their new stadium at Burnham Yard during the first public hearing held Thursday, February 12, as part of the official review process for major developments in the city and county of Denver. The meeting took place at the La Alma Recreation Center, where team president Damani Leech presented preliminary project concepts to local residents and authorities.
The plan envisions a modern stadium with a retractable roof and the capacity to host NFL games as well as large-scale events such as the Super Bowl and major concerts. The development includes not only the Broncos’ new home but also a mixed-use project featuring affordable housing, green spaces, and improved pedestrian connections to nearby neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park. The proposed site, Burnham Yard, is a historic industrial property located east of I-25 and close to the current Empower Field.
Concerns About Game-Day Congestion
During the hearing, team officials emphasized that financing will be fully private, provided by the Walton-Penner ownership group, with no public funds or taxpayer debt involved. The stadium is projected to open between 2031 and 2033, after the current team lease at their existing facility expires in 2030. While the project generated excitement for its futuristic design and expected economic impact, several residents expressed concerns about traffic and parking on game days.

Proponents explained that the project prioritizes public transportation, noting the presence of an existing light rail station in the area and the potential for additional transit connections. At the same time, the development aims to improve urban mobility by including large parking areas. The city will continue to receive community feedback before advancing to the next stage of the approval process, while the team refines the preliminary designs presented at this first public hearing.
