A judge in Weld County, Colorado, granted a temporary protection order to Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert against political activist David Wheeler. In issuing this order, the judge determined that there is a credible risk of physical, psychological, and emotional harm to the lawmaker. The legal measure prohibits the activist from coming within three hundred feet (ninety meters) of the representative, contacting her by any means, or interfering with her work activities in the middle of an election year.

The legal clash escalated after Wheeler, president of the political organization and Super PAC American Muckrakers, filed a sworn complaint with the House Ethics Committee bringing multiple allegations against the congresswoman for alleged ethics violations. The offensive attributed to Boebert alleged inappropriate relationships with staff under her supervision and the alleged payout of two hundred thousand dollars to silence a former staffer from her district office.

However, the filing presented to the legislative body quickly began to crumble on evidentiary grounds. The former director named in the document personally called the accusations “utterly false and defamatory,” while her ex-husband denied being the source of the claims and voluntarily took a polygraph test to refute the activist. After receiving “cease and desist” legal notices alleging falsehoods, the complainant himself was forced to amend the document submitted to the House.

Wheeler, a Longtime Adversary

Any citizen or interest group can submit a formal complaint to the House Ethics Committee, an entity that receives hundreds of petitions each year. The mere receipt of a document does not constitute the opening of a formal investigation or an admission of guilt, as the committee first evaluates the credibility and truthfulness of the testimony. To date, the congressional committee has not opened any case against the Republican congresswoman.

For years, Wheeler has focused his group’s work on investigating, tracking, and publishing damaging information about Boebert’s career, becoming one of her most persistent public adversaries.
