Being selected by Associated Press (AP) to join its national program for local media in 2026 is not just a recognition. Above all, it is a responsibility. El Comercio de Colorado takes this step with gratitude, but also with a renewed commitment to the community it has served since its founding.

The AP Fund for Journalism program represents one of the most ambitious initiatives in the United States to strengthen local journalism. In its most recent expansion, it brings together 100 newsrooms across the country with the goal of ensuring reliable, accessible, and useful information for communities.

It is a civic infrastructure designed to address the need to sustain access to verified news at a time of widespread misinformation. In this context, the inclusion of El Comercio de Colorado carries special significance. It is the only media outlet in the Colorado metropolitan area selected for this program.

Moreover, it is the only outlet with a mission centered on serving culturally Hispanic readers. This distinction not only recognizes the work accomplished, but also highlights the importance of an audience that has long been underrepresented in the media ecosystem. The program goes beyond providing content.

It offers access to nonpartisan news coverage, technological tools, training, and services that enable media organizations to grow, innovate, and achieve sustainability. Starting in 2026, participating outlets will also be able to share their own content through AP’s distribution network, expanding the reach and impact of their stories.

For El Comercio de Colorado, this opens a major opportunity. It means bringing the stories of Colorado’s Hispanic community to a much broader audience, while also raising standards of quality and depth in reporting. It serves as a bridge between the local and the global, between the voices of our community and the world.

But this achievement does not change our essence. On the contrary, it reinforces it. The mission remains to inform with rigor, connect with the community, and give a voice to those who are often unheard in major media outlets. This recognition does not belong solely to a newsroom. It belongs to a community that trusts, reads, and demands journalism that reflects its reality. The challenge now is to rise to the occasion.
