Over the past two months, an informal camp has been growing in the area of Zuni and 27th streets, housing migrants who needed to vacate a hotel used as a shelter. The city relocated them to a local hotel, where families could stay for 27 days and singles for 15 days. At the end of this period, many migrants moved to tents outside the hotel, obstructing access for area residents. The zone also became congested with dozens of volunteers assisting the migrants.

This situation prompted city authorities to act. Between January 3 and 5, the dismantling of this camp is underway. All tents and objects on the streets and sidewalks are being removed. People from the camp will be transferred to two new shelters provided by the city. Additionally, it is reported that around 100 migrants qualified for apartments, and the city will cover the first month’s rent for them.

Daily average of 100 to 150 new migrants

The Denver Department of Human Services reported that buses will transport people to the new shelters, where they can stay for 30 days. Currently, Denver is hosting around 4,000 people, marking a record in the number of migrants accommodated in a year. With a daily average of 100 to 150 new migrants arriving, the city is already operating seven different shelters and collaborating with the Archdiocese of Denver for the coordination of additional family shelters.
