Mayor Michael B. Hancock invites residents across Denver to join the City in showing support for first responders and essential workers with light displays. Hancock was joined by Councilwoman Kendra Black, and Police Chief Paul Pazen from safe distances to light Denver’s City and County Building in red and white as an expression of gratitude for all the first responders and medical personnel supporting the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public safety vehicles across the city are also lighting up with red and white in a unified show of support, and residents are being encouraged to put holiday lights on a tree, bush or window to honor all essential and frontline workers who go out every day to support our community. “The lights are glowing from Green Valley Ranch to Bear Valley, from Berkeley to Hampden Heights and everywhere in between as Denver neighborhoods say thank you to our first responders, medical professionals and essential workers,” said Hancock.

He continues, “their dedication cannot be taken for granted, so we are inviting everyone to show their thanks by showing their lights. I’m humbled by the sacrifice and service I have witnessed in recent weeks, and these lights on our City and County Building honor our Denver heroes and the heroes everywhere leading the response to this pandemic.” Hanncock encouraged Denver residents to share photos of their decorations using the hashtag #KeepCalmDenverOn

Taking action

The lights are the latest way for Denver residents to stay connected during the COVID crisis. Each night at 8 p.m., thanks to a Denver-based Facebook group, people across Colorado take to the streets to howl in a show of unity, gratitude, and just to let off some steam. The City and County Building will remain lighted in red and white through the end of April.
