El Comercio de Colorado has been selected as one of the recipients of the Press Forward funding program, a national initiative that allocates $20 million to 205 local newsrooms across the United States. This program aims to close coverage gaps and strengthen communities by revitalizing local news. Press Forward received 900 proposals from across the U.S. to select only 205.
Jesús Sánchez Meleán, editor of El Comercio de Colorado, commented, “This recognition reinforces our commitment to producing high-quality content that reflects the needs of our communities. We will continue expanding our coverage in print and digital editions, with bilingual content, to serve Colorado’s culturally Hispanic population.”
Sánchez Meleán explains that the organization’s plan includes reaching new urban areas in northern and southern Colorado. “In particular, we are also working to produce content for rural populations that are hard to reach, and to provide relevant information for migrants who arrive in the state and need access to news in Spanish.”
Alongside Other Local Colorado Media
El Comercio de Colorado is the only selected media outlet based in Denver. Other recognized outlets include Aurora Sentinel Community Media (Aurora), Asian Avenue Magazine (Aurora), KVNF Mountain Grown Community Radio (Paonia), Ouray County Plaindealer (Ridgway), San Miguel Basin Forum (Nucla), and Sopris Sun (Carbondale). These outlets serve communities that have traditionally been underserved by other media.
“El Comercio de Colorado is proud to be part of a diverse mosaic of independent, non-partisan sources that are redefining the landscape of local news in the United States. This support will allow our media outlet to continue informing and connecting Hispanic communities throughout Colorado,” concluded Sánchez Meleán, who is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) and the Colorado Ethnic Media Collective.
