The city of Aurora has received national recognition for its work with immigrant and refugee communities, after its Office of International and Immigration Affairs (OIIA) earned second place in the 2026 City Cultural Diversity Awards from the National League of Cities.
The award highlights the Immigrant Integration Plan as an innovative initiative that promotes inclusion, civic participation, and economic development. The recognition was presented during the National League of Cities Congress in Washington, D.C., where Aurora representatives accepted the award.

Plan Promotes Integration and Opportunities
The Immigrant Integration Plan was approved in December 2020 by the Aurora City Council and has since guided the OIIA’s actions. Its goal is to facilitate the integration of immigrant and refugee communities into the city’s economic, cultural, and civic life.
Key initiatives include support for small businesses, community engagement programs, citizenship and naturalization courses, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, and leadership development opportunities. These strategies aim to address the most urgent needs of a diverse and growing population.
Recognition Validates Local Strategy
Aurora is considered the most diverse city in Colorado, which has driven the creation of public policies focused on inclusion and equity. “This award confirms that Aurora is moving in the right direction. The OIIA has focused its efforts on recognizing the contributions of the international population and strengthening their integration,” says a city press release.
The model adopted by Aurora is uncommon in the United States, as few cities have a comprehensive municipal immigrant integration strategy. The National League of Cities, which represents more than 2,700 municipalities nationwide, highlighted the plan’s innovative approach and its impact on residents’ quality of life.

Evaluation Aims to Strengthen Programs
As part of its ongoing work, the OIIA is conducting a complementary evaluation to better understand the current needs of the community. This process includes focus groups in English and Spanish, as well as open public surveys. The results will help adjust and improve existing strategies.
Additionally, data from a demographic study conducted by George Mason University in Aurora will be integrated. Authorities invite residents to participate in these consultations to ensure that policies reflect community realities. The OIIA was created to lead the city’s integration efforts.
Aurora Strengthens Its Leadership in Diversity
The Office of International and Immigration Affairs was established to lead integration efforts in the city. In addition to developing local programs, it also coordinates international relations and promotes global partnerships. With this recognition, Aurora solidifies its position as one of the nation’s leading cities in inclusion.
